James Corden has details revealed details about the Christmas reunion special of Gavin & Stacey, promising fans it will be a "nostalgic joy-bomb".

The actor revealed he and Ruth Jones decided they would bring back the BBC sitcom for an hour-long special for Christmas 2019, as they "owed it to the characters".

Gavin & Stacey has been off-screen for almost a decade, and now fans have a glimpse at what they can expect from the forthcoming episode as well as how the creators reached the decision to reprise it for one time only.

"We owed it to the characters. Let's see what they're doing. We wanted to see if there was something there. Once there was, my feeling was, life's too short," explained Corden to the Sunday Times Culture Magazine.

The actor, who appeared as Smithy in the series, continued: "Fear is the absolute reason to do it. This sounds ridiculously deep but none of us are promised tomorrow. We're here for a minute, you have to try to do it all."

When asked whether Brexit would arise on the show, James said: "We did talk about it. But we just want the new show to be a nostalgic joy-bomb."

And if you're hoping you'll find out what went down on *that* fishing trip, sadly Corden says fans will never know.

James and Ruth, who played Nessa, confirmed the series would return with a picture of the script on Twitter last month.

"Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while... We're excited to share it with you. See you on Christmas Day," he shared.

And Larry Lamb, who starred as Gavin's dad Mick Shipman on the show, revealed that he cried over the first scene of the new special.

"I literally got the script just before I came on and I read the first scene and I was weeping," he admitted on BBC's World at One shortly after news broke of the special.

A "nostalgic joy-bomb" which will have us all weeping is no doubt already exceeding expectations. We can't wait.
