ITV's upcoming drama Quiz is poised to tell the unbelievable story of how one couple and their accomplice managed to win £1 million on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? by cheating.

Helen McCroy and Michael Sheen will lead the all-star cast for the drama which documents how Major Charles Ingram and his wife Diana swindled the popular game show in 2001 to take home the full seven figure prize.

Ingram, his wife and an accomplice, Tecwen Whittock, who was sitting in the audience, were accused of cheating when producers watched the recording of the show back.

The couple stood trial for conspiring by coughing to signal the correct answers to the multiple choice questions, posed by the show's host Chris Tarrant.

Now, brand new teaser photos from the drama shows the cast in characters.

Images show Charles Ingram - played by Matthew Macfadyen - celebrating his big win, showered by confetti, while other images show Ingram and his wife Diana - played by Fleabag's Sian Clifford - being probed by news reporters outside their home.

A third image shows the conman being congratulated by game show host Chris Tarrant, played by Michael Sheen.

Other cast include Michael Jibson as Tecwen Whittock, Mark Bonnar as Celador Television Chairman, Paul Smith, Helen McCrory as Sonia Woodley QC, and Aisling Bea as ITV Entertainment Commissioner, Claudia Rosencrantz.

The Ingram's 18-month trial gripped the nation at the time, with the couple maintaining their innocence. Eventually, they were dealt an 18-month suspended sentence and fines of £25,000.

A first look photo was released back in November, which saw Michael Sheen recreate a famous shot of the 73-year-old game show host arriving to court to give evidence at Ingram's 2003 trail.

The three-part drama is directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen) and written by James Graham, (This House, Labour of Love), based on his play of the same name.

Speaking of the new show, writer Graham said in a statement: "I was gripped by this story over 15 years ago, and I'm still gripped now. It's a very English heist.

"Putting it onto stage at Chichester and the West End was such a lot of fun, and with a new team we now get to re-imagine the whole story afresh for television.

"I have to pay credit to the late investigative journalist Bob Woffinden, who along with James Plaskett wrote the book Bad Show that kicked the whole creative process off by asking the question - what if the Major is innocent?"

ITV haven't given an exact release date for Quiz yet, but given the show's launch and photocall took place today, we're betting we don't have long to wait.

Can't wait.
