In an effort to give people from disadvantaged backgrounds a jump-start in their career, ITV is partnering with ScreenSkills to offer experience working on TV.

The broadcaster wants to create career opportunities for people from challenging circumstances who want to work in television.

ITV will be taking part in skills body ScreenSkills' First Break social mobility programme, offering an intro to TV for those lacking contacts in the industry.

Successful candidates will earn short but fully paid placements on soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale, so if you're a fan of those shows and not sure where to get started in TV, maybe now is your chance.

The head of human resources at ITV Studios UK, Trish Brady, said: "ITV has made a public commitment to improve society representation on screen, as well as increase diversity and inclusivity behind the scenes."

She went on: "Partnering with ScreenSkills on this important initiative is key to helping us get closer to ensuring our workforce represents our audience, it's a big goal but one we hope First Break will help us get even closer to fulfilling."

One hundred successful First Break candidates will be given a taster at an event offering an introduction to the industry.

This number will then be narrowed down to 40, who will attend a boot camp for skills, offering an insight into knowledge from chains of command to on-set etiquette to handling equipment.

Then, that 40 will be narrowed down further to 10 candidates, who will be selected for five days of paid full-time work shadowing on Emmerdale and Corrie.

The days will be spread across technical, creative/practical, organisational and ideas-related departments to avoid "intimidating candidates with job titles or grades at too early a stage".

Travel expenses will be fully paid and all candidates will be offered a mentor.

Kaye Elliott, ScreenSkills' Director of High-end Television, said: "First Break is aimed at encouraging, nurturing and supporting people to consider a career in television and give them the tools, knowledge and taster experience to take their first steps in."

ScreenSkills is expected to announce application details soon, so keep an eye on its website if you're interested in applying.
