There's a brand new Netflix series in town, and it is being described as a mash-up between Stranger Things, Black Mirror and Inception...

This new one is titled Maniac and stars huge Hollywood names, including Emma Stone as Annie Landsberg and Jonah Hill as Owen Milgrim. The two's characters are strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial and things do not go as planned.

Maniac's trailer is a little trippy to say the least, beginning with Annie and Owen being asked a series of questions by Justin Theroux's character, Dr James K. Mantleray, in a science lab.

Netflix

Justin plays the lead scientist, who's in charge of the medical trial, and things get WEIRD.

He tells Annie and Owen, plus a load of other participants, that he can get rid of their pain. Then pair are then seen in some sort of dream-like state, travelling to places they don't seem to be able to get out of.

Jonah and Emma's characters are also constantly drawn together in the 'multi-reality brain magic sh*t'. They can't get rid of one another from their consciousness, and the scientists can't stop it either.

Netflix

There's little explanation over why the characters want to take part in the drugs trial in the trailer, but the synopsis states that Annie was drawn to it after being fixated over broken relationships with her mother and sister.

On the other hand, Owen has been struggled through 'a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia', and is drawn in by the doctor's promise of new, radical pharmaceutical treatment.

Netflix

This series will drop onto Netflix later this year, and you will be able to binge watch it on the subscription streaming service from 21st September.

This series is the English language-adaptation of the Norwegian comedy of the same name, Maniac, and has been directed by Cary Fukunaga.
