'Game Of Thrones' Prequel Has Begun Casting Main Characters

Game of Thrones fans, can you believe it's been over a year since the fantasy epic was last on our screens?

While we're lowkey bereft at the show being over (let's face it, there's nothing even near the same calibre on screens right now if you're a fantasy fan), we're somewhat soothed by the excitement about the upcoming prequel, House of the Dragon.

The upcoming series, based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, which centres on the history of the House of Targaryen, is said to be set 300 years before the events of GoT.

It's a thrilling prospect for any Thrones super-fan, and guess what? HBO have begun casting their main characters.

The exciting news was confirmed by sources at the network, according to Entertainment Weekly.

But before you go expecting us to drop a few famous names, be warned it'll be a while before we find out which actors and actresses will be taking on the lead characters.

After all, we still don't even know anything about which characters will feature, with HBO remaining tight-lipped on the plot.

For now, we can only speculate that Targaryen ancestors namechecked in Thrones when we heard tales about the House's history will feature, including King Viserys I, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Queen Alicent Hightower and Aegon II Targaryen.

As for who will be cast, we're predicting HBO will recruit a heady mix of household names and fresh talent to follow in the footsteps of the Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headley, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams et al.

What we do know is that Ryan Condal (Colony) will act as showrunner alongside GoT director Miguel Sapochnik, who was responsible for iconic episodes such as 'The Battle of the Bastards' and 'The Winds of Winter'. George R.R. Martin will help with writing duties.

House of Dragons has been given a preliminary release date of 2022, with HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys confirming Martin and Condal had began writing in January.

When word of the first castings come in, you'll be the first to know!
