Fans of the spooky genre are often misconceived as psychopaths who lack empathy, but now horror fans all over the world are taking to Twitter to explain just what the genre means to them.
The #ImAHorrorfan movement was prompted when Jonathan Barkannukah responded to tweet from Uber Facts, which claimed: "People who prefer gory horror films typically have low empathy, high sensation seeking, and - among males - a strong bond with the killer."

He responded: "Time and time again, horror fans are uncharacteristically mislabeled, sneered at, and seen as dangerous. The truth is that you're all some of the most generous, friendly, and beautiful people out there. So let's show the world who we are and proudly say #ImAHorrorFan!"
Hundreds of horror fans joined in on the trend to defend to genre, and talk about what it means to them.
Horror films are severely under appreciated & under valued. They are commentaries on politics, sex & gender in society; playing on the fears of the time in which they were created. As someone who suffers from anxiety, this genre has helped me rationalize my fears. #ImAHorrorFan

There is no genre so pure, so transgressive, so progressive, and so timeless as horror. And there is no filmmaking community so loving, supportive, and collaborative as those who make it. I am blessed to be a part of it. #ImAHorrorFan

#ImAHorrorFan because I love a high-stakes thrill & a great illusion, & as a perpetual worrier I like to see worst-case scenarios unfold in works of fiction. I love a provocateur. In other horror fans I've found some of the most sympathetic & hilarious people I've ever known.

I'm a pacifist, I hate real world violence, I love cartoons & puppies & Christmas. I also always have, and always will, LOVE seeing demonic hellcreatures slaughter people in the most violent gory ways possible. The nicest folks I know are fans of the dark & macabre. #ImAHorrorFan https://t.co/cpjAzkRhiT

I suffer from almost crippling anxiety but horror movies for some reason calm my anxiety and let me process it in a controlled manner. Not to mention all the cool people I know because of horror films. #ImAHorrorFan
