Disney has now released a trailer for their new Disney+ show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, following the success of the popular film franchise.

The show, which has the longest and most ridiculous name we have literally ever heard, was officially announced last year, with the channel revealing the first details at the weekend, stating it was "not a reboot, not a sequel," but instead "the start of something new". See what they did there?!

And the trailer for the ten episode series has certainly divided opinion, boasting a whole new cast of high-schoolers who seek to act out the movie in which Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez meet and fall in love.

The trailer shows the students auditioning, and lead characters Ricky (Joshua Bassett) and Nini (Olivia Rodrigo) being given the roles.

Other new characters include Nini's understudy Gina (described as an 'entitled princess'), choreographer Vikram, Ricky's best mate Big Red and the school's new arrival Ashlyn.

Filmed in the same East High school that the movie took place, the trailer also gives a sneak peak at the mockmentary style of the new show. (Think lots of talking to the camera like we saw in Glee.)

It showcases a little of what we can expect from the plot too, with new pushy drama teacher Miss Jenn's 'meta' ideas for the production including a male Sharpay Evans.

Plus, it teases heartache between our two leads, Ricky and Nini, as they grapple with the breakdown of their own real life relationship while playing the teenage lovers.

Nini is now dating someone new, but will the romantic story bring them back together again?

It also looks like fans can expect some of the classic songs they've grown to love from the first film, with the school's own version of Stick To The Status Quo playing throughout the clip.

The trailer has naturally prompted a lot of thoughts and feelings from loyal High School Musical fans, with some hailing the series' release, while others are, quite frankly, fuming about it.

Pointing out that the franchise wouldn't be the same without its original cast, which included Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens, one raged: "No zac. no vanessa. no ashley. no lucas. no corbin. no monique. no bart. no high school musical. throw the whole show away!!"

While another chipped in: "No no no no one asked for this please don't ruin high school musical," and a third joked: "What in fresh Glee is this?".

"It actually looks good I love the twist that it isn't a sequel or remake," one more positive fan disagreed with the haters.

As a fourth was also keen on the idea. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but High School Musical: The Musical: The Series looks like it might...be good? This concept is iconic if they do it right," they said.

What do you make of the concept? It looks like the jury is still out...

You'll have to tune into the Disney+ show when it streams on November 12 to decide if it measures up.
