Earlier this week, the original cast of High School Musical reunited for a special Disney singalong performance of 'We're All In This Together' - but fans were left disappointed at Zac Efron's appearance.

Although favourite faces including Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu could be seen singing and dancing in the virtual performance, Zac's appearance was in the form of a video message at the start of the track, where he introduced his former co-stars.

Earlier this week, we explained that Zac would be recording a special message, but wouldn't be as involved in the performance as other cast members.

This was because creators were unable to reach the actor straight away. Director Kenny Ortega told Deadline: "We couldn't reach Zac until late but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course."

In his recorded message, he explained: "Hey everyone, I hope that you're safe and that you're healthy and doing as well as possible during these unprecedented times.

"It's my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends and some new ones. I hope you enjoy and remember, we are all in this together."

Despite the cute intro, fans still felt a little cheated, with many wondering why Zac couldn't have belted out a few notes during the virtual show.

One said: I just need to know what could have been so important right now that Zac Efron couldn't join the HSM reunion for the Disney sing along?"

While another tweeted: "Zac Efron didn't even sing on the Disney sing along?!? #disappointed."

"Goodnight to everyone who was on the Disney sing along, except Zac Efron," said another fan.

One person even went as far as to say they felt "bamboozled".

"I was bamboozled tonight. I watched the Disney sing along waiting to hear Zac efron sing and HE DIDNT SING!!! THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANT THIS IS NOT WHAT I PLANNED AND I JUST GOTTA SAY I DO NOT UNDERSTAND," they said.

Others said they were gutted that Zac has missed "another High School Musical reunion" referring to when the actor missed the 10 year anniversary in 2016.

At the time it was believed to be because the filming clashed with promoting his film, Dirty Grandpa, but the actor did record some messages for the special occasion.

"Watching this ABC disney sing along just to be disappointed again by zac efron not joining in on another HSM reunion," wrote one fan.

Ryan Seacrest, who hosted the Disney singalong, blamed "patchy wifi" on Zac's lack of performance. "This star is hunkered down in the middle of nowhere with patchy WiFi, but he did not want to miss out on tonight," he said.

But fans were not happy with that, either, with one joking: "LMAOOOO ZAC EFRON HAVING SH***Y WIFI RIGHT NOW FOR THE DISNEY SING ALONG HAHAHAHAHAS PLEAASSSSSEEEE".

Many fans did jump to Zac's defence however, with several being mega excited to see his face regardless.

One said: "Thomas Rhett and Zac Efron back to back on the Disney sing along was the best thing that's happened to me."

While another tweeted: "Zac Efron just introduced the HSM cast on the Disney sing along and i got chills... it really is the little things in life rn."

The virtual show reunited former Disney stars, who performed their best-loved musical numbers for fans in lockdown.

While Ariana performed 'I Won't Say I'm In Love' from Hercules, Demi Lovato and Michael Buble teamed up for 'A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes'.

Christina Aguilera sang 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight' from The Lion King while Thomas Rhett performed 'Do You Want to Build a Snowman' from Frozen.

And fans couldn't contain their excitement when Beyonce surprised fans with a performance of 'When You Wish Upon a Star' from Pinocchio.

If you missed out on the singalong, you can catch some of the performances on ABC's Facebook page.
