From Killing Eve to Bodyguard, the BBC has been treating us to an incredible array of dramas to watch of late, and now there's an addictive new series to start watching: The Victim on BBC One.

The four-part legal thriller is set in the landscape of Scotland's legal system, questioning the concept of being a victim through the eyes of the plaintiff and the accused: promos for the show read: "In law, there is the accused and the victim. In life, it's not that simple." Sounds intriguing.

The show, written by Rob Williams, is all about an assault on a man who has been identified online as a child killer, and what happens next.

"Kelly Macdonald plays Anna Dean, whose nine year old son was murdered fifteen years ago," a teaser for the show reads. "She is accused of revealing her son's killer's new identity online and conspiring to have him murdered. Has the anger of a grieving mother turned her into a criminal too?

"Hardworking family man Craig Myers, played by James Harkness, is the victim of a vicious attack, after being identified online as a notorious child murderer. Is he simply the tragic victim of mistaken identity; or the dangerous killer he is suspected of being?

"John Hannah plays DI Grover, an experienced detective investigating the attack on Craig and trying to discover who made the online accusation against him.

"Opening on day one of a criminal trial in Edinburgh's High Court, The Victim follows the legal proceedings, while also covering the events leading up to the trial.

"Craig and Anna are pitted against each other, but our sympathies will be divided. New potential suspects will be revealed and long-buried secrets are unearthed as the story builds to a final, devastating climax."

The series looks like it will have plenty of twists and turns as we follow the legal proceedings on our way to finding out who made the online accusation against Craig, and whether he is or isn't the notorious child killer.

"Bold, original and constantly surprising, The Victim showcases perfectly our ambition for Scottish drama," says Elizabeth Kilgarriff, BBC senior commissioning editor for England and Scotland.

"Set in Edinburgh and Greenock, against the backdrop of the Scottish legal system, Rob's brilliant scripts will be brought to life by an extraordinary cast that features the wonderful Kelly MacDonald and John Hannah, whilst introducing James Harkness and other exciting rising Scottish stars to the BBC One audience."

The Victim begins on Monday, 8th April on BBC One at 9pm. Episodes will be aired over the following three days, ending on Thursday, 11th April.
