Professor McGonagall Has Been Voted The Best Harry Potter Character

While the weather outside is, well, frightful, there's only one thing to during the long lockdown evenings - binge-watch the Harry Potter franchise.

Nothing heralds the beginning of the Christmas season more than the adventures of the boy-wizard, with many of us enjoying the childhood classics once more with all our favourite characters.

And now, the all-time best Harry Potter character has been decided - and the results may surprise you, with Professor Minerva McGonagall coming out top in a recent fan survey by Ranker.

The Head of Gryffindor House, McGonagall (played by Downton Abbey's Maggie Smith) is Hogwarts' Transfiguration teacher, and played a vital role defeating Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

But while she's certainly a popular character amongst fans, she has outranked some of the series' main characters - including Harry, Ron and Hermione themselves.

The rest of the list is equally as surprising, with Remus Lupin - who was the prominent Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher/werewolf in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, coming in second place.

Rubeus Hagrid, the keeper of the keys and close friend of Harry's, placed third.

Other shocks in the top ten saw cheeky twins George and Fred Weasley, Ron's prankster older brothers, come fourth and fifth respectively, while ethereal and unique Luna Lovegood placed sixth.

Dobby the House Elf, who warned Harry not to return to Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, was seventh, ahead of Harry Potter himself, who drew eighth.

Harry's rebel godfather, Sirius Black, while misunderstood potions master Severus Snape came in at ninth and tenth overall.

It's bad news for Ron fans too - while Hermione trailed in at 12^th place, behind Albus Dumbledore, Ron came in 17^th place, behind Neville Longbottom and Hedwig. Ouch.

Shocked? Us too - but with 75 main characters in the Harry Potter franchise, can't we just say we love them all equally?

In other controversial Harry Potter news, The Prisoner of Azkaban has been voted the best film of the series by fans, with Potterheads agreeing the film's balance between dark themes and light comedy makes it the most watchable.
