There's still three episodes of season three to go, yet The Handmaid's Tale has been renewed for a fourth season, it has been announced.

Hulu announced that the fight to liberate Gilead will be waging on two weeks ahead of the season finale airing on Wednesday 14th August.

Based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Margaret Attwood, the fourth season will see June (Elisabeth Moss) purge on with her war against the oppressive dystopian state, and her fight to rescue her daughter, Hannah.

Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, Yvonne Strahovsk, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer also star.

The critically-acclaimed series cleaned up at the 2017 Emmy Awards winning the trophy for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing (Reed Morano) ,and the Outstanding Lead Actress (Elisabeth Moss).

The Handmaid's has become an original series for Hulu who say it is the streaming site's most-watched show.

Fans were left on a cliffhanger at the end of season two, where June gave up her baby, Nicole, and her escape out of Gilead in order to go back and save her daughter, Hannah.

Speaking about series three, showrunner Bruce Miller told Vanity Fair: "June is diving back into Gilead because she thinks there's things she can do. And I think initially, the thing she thinks she can do is just get her f*cking daughter out.

"If she could snap her fingers and get Hannah and leave, she would do it immediately. If that becomes more difficult - which, it seems to be somewhere between difficult and impossible in the real world - then I think hurting Gilead or weakening Gilead is the best way she can plow the ground for her daughter.

"That's the thing she can do from the inside that she wouldn't be able to do from Canada."

Series three has seen continue with her fight to save her daughter and liberate Gilead, forming 'the resistance'.

The Handmaid's Tale continues on Hulu and Channel 4 on Sunday 4th August.
