Grey's Anatomy Could Be Getting Another Spinoff From Shonda Rhimes

Another Grey's Anatomy spin-off show could well be on the cards, as showrunner Krista Vernoff has confirmed she's "working on" ideas with the series' creator, Shonda Rhimes.

The medical drama has already birthed hits like Station 19 and Private Practice, but now another show could be on the cards.

Speaking to Deadline, ABC's signature president Jonnie Davis confirmed: "Krista and the team are really digging deep and finding out what that looks like.

"They are noodling ideas, and I can't wait to, when we land on what that is, to introduce the next phase of Grey's Anatomy.

"We will find the next version that will take it to the next 18 years. We're working on for right now, and there's no better brains to figure it out than Krista and Shonda."

However, Davis added that it was important the show wasn't just "for commerce".

"It has to be the right idea that meets the moment," he explained.

Looking back at the series' incredible success, he added: "The show has just had so much appeal and people who love it already, people who are just finding it.

"Look, we want that show to go on for another 18 years."

While we don't have any clues about what a spin-off would look like yet, some fans have some pretty strong feelings about what they want from it.

Calling for a Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and April Kepner (Sarah Drew) spin-off following their emotional reunion in the most recent series, Japril stans are adamant that the on-off couple are the perfect basis of a new show.

"Sorry but I literally need this Japril spinoff to happen my emotional stability depends on it," wrote one fan, as Jesse Williams bowed out the series.

As another concurred: "Shonda you know this spinoff is meant for Japril and Japril alone!! Let's not play!!! @shondarhimes @msdebbieallen".

Other spin-offs people want to see include a series following Derek Shepherd (Patric Dempsey) and Ellen Pompeo's character Meredith Grey's eldest daughter, Zola.

"ZOLA SPIN OFF," one fan rather abruptly urged, after the potential new show was announced.

Now that we'd love to see. Will she be a surgeon like her parents?

Meanwhile, someone else thought it was Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robins (Jessica Capshaw) that needed a show of their own after both having previously departed Grey Sloane in recent years.

"WE WANT CALZONA!!!," they wrote. "IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK?"

Grey's fans sure do have a lot of opinions. As for what shape the spin-off will take, we guess we'll have to wait and find out...

Grey's Anatomy season 17 is airing on Sky Witness in the UK and ABC in the US. Plus, select episodes of the current series are available NOW, while seasons 1-16 are available to stream on Disney+.
