Fans of Gossip Girl get excited as a reboot of the beloved series has FINALLY been confirmed - although don't expect any of the original cast to appear.

Ever since the beloved teen drama disappeared from screens in seven years ago, fans have been desperate to know whether Blair Walforf (Leighton Meester), Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively), Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), Nate Archibold (Chace) and co. will ever reunite.

And fans will still have to wait as the plot takes place eight years after the original series, which ran from 2007 to 2012, and will follow a new generation of privileged teenagers in New York, who rely on a present-day Gossip Girl blog.

And expect the luxurious and scandal-driven world of Manhattan's elite to bring the drama as the reboot will address how social media and NYC has changed in the intervening years.

Currently there's no casting information but creator Josh Schwartz, who also developed The O.C. , will return to the helm of the show as an executive producer.

The series will include 10 one-hour episodes and will premiere on upcoming streaming service HBO Max in the US, although no release date has been announced nor is it known how fans this side of the pond will be able to watch it.

The original Gossip Girl series aired six seasons from 2007 to 2012 and followed the lives of privileged teenagers as they navigate complicated relationships and the city's high society lifestyle.

The series was narrated by the anonymous Gossip Girl, whose blog was a crucial source of scandalous information for the show's characters.

Despite the initial excitement, fans have taken to Twitter to share their mixed feelings about the reboot, with a whole new set of characters.

One penned: "A Gossip Girl reboot...without the original characters? No Blair or Serena? Not sure how I feel about that."

"Please can they just not ruin the gossip girl name by bringing a full new cast into it," another shared.

A third, however, celebrated its return and wrote: "I dont care if gossip girl being rebooted with a new cast what matters is the series is getting a reboot, and it's by hbo so it will probably be more explicit than the previous series [sic]."

The news comes days after Chace Crawford teased a Gossip Girl reboot - although with an entirely new cast and characters rather than the originals reprising their iconic roles.

As for who would star, the Texas native said he would be up for a cameo but whether he will or not - well that's not a secret we'll ever tell xoxo.
