Mathew Horne says the upcoming Gavin & Stacey Christmas special is "the best episode of the show" they've ever done.

We think we'll have the final say on that, mind.

Mathew, 41, who plays Gavin in the TV show, is set to return to our screens on Christmas Day for a special one-off episode on BBC One and he's filling us with confidence it's set to be a goodun'.

However, he wasn't always so confident, speaking on The Chris Moyles Show, he explained the cast were a little worried about it at first.

He said: "So we were quite anxious as to whether we were all going to work together well again and the chemistry was going to be there and it was going to be the Gavin & Stacey of old."

However, now he's seen it fully prepared, he's sure the audience are going to love it.

Adding: "I've seen it now and I'm so proud of it".

He told the show: "I think it's the best episode of the show we've ever done," adding that the cast coming back together for it was an "emosh" experience.

"We've all stayed in touch but we don't see each other all the time and getting back together was like bringing families back together," he said.

"It's really shocking to think when I first started filming it I was 27 and I'm now 41. It's just bizarre. The passing of time."

'Gavin and Stacey' is only planned to return for a one-off but writer Ruth Jones has hinted there might be more (

The show, which ran for three season between 2007 and 2010, had its one-off return confirmed back in May by James Corden.

The 41-year old tweeted: "Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while... We're excited to share it with you. See you on Christmas Day @BBCOne #GavinandStacey".

At the time, the cast admitted that they'd always considered returning.

In a statement on the show's return, Ruth, 53 and James said: "Over the last ten years we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special."

They added: "We're so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen."
