Frozen 2 was the most eagerly awaited animated flick to hit cinemas this year (sorry The Lion King) and the Disney franchise has just proved that after it brought in £272 million ($350 million) globally following its Friday release.

The animated phenomenon, which has spawned musical hits Do You Want To Build A Snowman? and Let It Go, pulled in a whopping £98.9 million ($127 million) in its opening weekend at the US box office and another £173 million ($223 million) globally.

The sequel to the 2013 sensation not only broke November records for animated films, but it also became the "largest day-and-date global animated debut in history", according to Variety.

Frozen 2 also had the biggest opening weekend ever for Walt Disney Animation, and is the first animated movie to bring in a triple digit opening outside of a summer weekend.

The film had the third-best opening weekend for an animated film behind Pixar's Finding Dory (£104 million), and The Incredibles 2 (£141 million).

In 2013, the original broke all kinds of cinema records bringing in a whopping £986 million ($1.27 billion) at global box offices to become the highest grossing animated film of all time.

Meanwhile, Frozen 2 has fans of the original rushing to social media to rave about it.

The Disney sequel is set three years after the events of the first film and sees Elsa embark on a journey north after she hears a strange sound calling her.

Along with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven, the characters leave their home of Arendelle and embark on an adventure to discover the origin of Elsa's powers and ultimately save their kingdom.

Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad are all back to voice the characters for the sequel, which has been branded "darker" than the first by critics.

Taking to Twitter in their droves, cinema goers have claimed Frozen 2 is the "best movie of the year" - yes they went there - and others giving it a whopping ten out of ten.

"No cap Frozen 2 best movie of the year so far," one fan shared.

Another penned: "@DisneyFrozen #Frozen2 was AMAZING. I loved it so much! Can't wait to watch it again lol! Make sure you stay for the end credits!"

"So I already watched frozen 2 and... WHY I SAW SO MANY ELSA AND ANNA MOMENTS THAN ANNA WITH HER BF AKELFLGL," a third wrote. "But after all... the movie is perfect, I luv it!" (sic).

A cinema-goer posted: "Disney DID NOT DISAPPOINT".

The fan reaction comes two weeks after film critics shared their thoughts on the sequel and insisted that is was better than the original film.
