A First Dates contestant was left in flood of tears after retelling the story of how she was catfished by her so-called best friends.

On this week's episode of the Channel 4 dating show, a diner name Maria recalled a time when her friends catfished her by pretending to be a guy called Will.

Sharing the story with her date Albert, Maria explained that she got a text from someone after a night out who identified themselves as Will, saying they had met the night before.

The pair then continued texting before arranging to meet, at which point her so-called friends came clean with their cruel prank.

Maria told Albert: "I went out for my brother's birthday and the next day I got a text from Will.

"So I was texting this Will and I said to my pals at the time, 'Oh, Will's coming tonight.' And they were like, 'We know, we're Will.' So they were texting me."

"I don't really understand how you can manipulate and make someone feel so small," she added. "They knew I wanted a boyfriend. They knew my weaknesses. They're my best mates, do you know what I mean?"

After a horrified reaction from Albert, Maria confirmed the girls "were" her best friends - past tense. Phew.

Speaking directly to the cameras, Maria broke down in tears as she recalled the heartbreaking incident.

"I went home and I cried all the way home. How can you toy with my emotions like that?" she said.

Dabbing away her tears with a tissue, Maria apologised: "Sorry, I never thought I'd get emotional about it. I haven't got emotional about it for so long."

Naturally, viewers were gobsmacked at the story, and rushed to Maria's support on Twitter.
