If there's been a big Henry Cavill shaped hole in your life since finishing The Witcher season 1 then we have some good news for you - season 2 is coming to Netflix next year, and it looks like it's going to be even better than the first.

The action-packed series, which has been branded "better than Game of Thrones by both fans and critics, captured all our imaginations last December, and it feels like we've been waiting forever for the second instalment, which has had a turbulent time due to the pandemic.

However now that filming has resumed, here's everything we know about what's to come.

*The following information contains season 1 spoilers*

Is Season 2 of The Witcher Confirmed?

Yes! And not just a new season - there's an animated movie in production, too.

Where Did Season 1 Leave Us?

The Witcher season 1 ended with Yennefer's fate unknown, Nilfgaard's army temporarily defeated and Geralt of Rivia finally united with his Child of Surprise, Ciri.

As Gerald realises in those closing moments of the episode, the pair are linked by destiny, and they were always meant to find each other.

The ending also sees Ciri asking Gerald who Yennefer is. However, the big question is what happened to Yennefer after the finale's big battle?

The mage using her powers to defeat the Nilfgaardian army will mean serious repercussions for her, as it's impossible to wield that much magic without paying a hefty price.

Who Will Star in The Witcher Season 2?

Henry Cavill (Geralt), AnyaChalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) are all set for the second season, while Netflix has announced that new witchers are joining the cast too: Lambert, played by Paul Bullion, and Coën, played by Yasen Atour.

In May 2020, Redanian Intelligence also rumored a third new witcher coming: Hemrik, played by Joel Adrian.

Killing Eve's Kim Bodnia plays witcher trainer, Vesemir, and Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones' Tormund Giantsbane) will play Nivellen. Other new castings include Mecia Simson as Francesca, Aisha Fabienne Ross as Lydia and Agnes Bjorn as Vereena.

Unfortunately due to Covid-related scheduling complications, Thue Ersted Rasmussen will no longer be playing Eskel, and has been replaced by Basil Eidenbenz.

He called his decision to exit the show "heartbreaking," adding, "but I mostly feel happy and grateful for the days I got to spend on the set earlier this year."

Returning characters from season one include Jaskier (Joey Batey), Triss (Anna Shaffer) and Eamon Farren, who will be back as Cahir, too.

Other familiar faces from season one will include Tissaia (MyAnna Buring), Filavandrel (Tom Canton), Stregobor (Lars Mikkelson), Artorius (Terence Maynard), Sabrina (Therica Wilson Read), Murta (Lilly Cooper), Yarpen Zigrin (Jeremy Crawford) and Istredd (Royce Pierreson).

Phew!

What Will Happen In The Witcher Season 2?

Season two consists of eight episodes, with Stephen Surjik, Sarah O'Gorman, Ed Bazalgette, and Geeta Patel each directing two episodes.

Expect it to pick up various plot threads from a number of different Witcher books, just like the first batch of episodes did.

Speaking to Digital Spy, producer Lauren Hissrich explained: "What I would say is that season one is very much about building blocks. It's about constructing the world, and setting up these characters, and putting them on paths, and knocking those dominoes over.

"When you get to season two, all of those things start to come to play, which is that characters start meeting each other - sometimes getting along, sometimes not.

All those things that we set up - Geralt and Yennefer, Geralt and Ciri, Yennefer and Ciri - all of the different kingdoms that you just barely hear about in season one, start rising to the surface in season two.

"So the storytelling is a little more intense in a way, and maybe a little more focused and driven in the journeys that we're telling in season two."

She has also previously said that season two is about "getting Geralt back to his roots and sort of learning where he came from and what his story is and what his sense of family is", so expect to see Geralt go back to Kaer Morhen, a.k.a. the place witchers are trained, to meet his mentors.

Is there A Release Date?

The Witcher season 2 release date is 2021, though the actual date hasn't yet been revealed. Filming of the show resumed in August 2020, and Henry Cavill went back to putting pictures of his Geralt wig on Instagram.

Also, as of September 2019, the first two episodes appear to have completed filming, as Stephen Surjik wrapped up his time directing the show:

Let's hope there's not too long to wait!
