Luther is returning to our screens on January 1st and we can't wait.

Idris Elba last appeared in the crime drama in December 2015 in the fourth season of the show, which was just two episodes long.

It was announced in June 2017 that series co-creator Neil Cross had signed up Elba to return as the detective for four brand new episodes of the crime series.

When will season five of Luther air?

Luther returns to BBC One on January 1st at 9pm on BBC1.

How many episodes of Luther will there be?

The fourth series was just two episodes, but the fifth will consist of four hour-long instalments.

Who will appear in the new series of Luther?

Wunmi Mosaku, who won the 2017 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Gloria Taylor in the TV film Damilola, Our Loved Boy, will join the cast as Luther's assistant DS Catherine Halliday.

Mosaku will replace Rose Leslie's DS Emma Lane, who is not expected to return.

Cold Feet actress Hermione Norris will play the psychiatrist Dr Vivien Lake.

Creepy character Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson, will also return, as will DSU Martin Schenk (played by Dermot Crowley), Benny "Deadhead" Silver (Michael Smiley) and George Cornelius, portrayed by Patrick Malahide.

What happened at the end of the fourth season?

Season four is centred around Alice's supposed death which sees Luther return to London to continue his detective work, although it is never confirmed if she died.

In the last episode aired back in 2015, Luther discovered that Alice had been murdered by another female killer Megan Cantor, played by Laura Haddock, while trying to set up a new life with the detective

What will happen in season five?

The official press release states: "As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

"But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past.

"Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect... and who to sacrifice.
