Nineties kids get ready - a film adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda is coming to cinemas and streaming on Netflix in the not-too-distant future.

A live-action film of the award-winning Matilda the Musical is in the works with a star-studded cast rumoured to be playing key characters.

And that's not all! Our favourite child genius is back in musical form and we're so excited for this one!

Here's what we know so far...

When is Matilda being released?

Netflix, in partnership with Sony Pictures, will release the film in cinemas, though it hasn't been confirmed when this will be.

It's expected that the film will hit UK cinemas first, before being streamed on Netflix worldwide.

Filming hasn't started yet, so it's likely we'll have a long wait.

According to a casting call earlier this year, filming was due to start in August this year and run until December, but under current restrictions, it may not happen quite yet.

Whether filming starts this year or not, the film probably won't be out until late 2021 at the earliest.

What will this new adaptation of Matilda be about?

This new adaptation is based on the 1988 Roald Dahl novel of the same name, and will be adapted by Matthew Warchus, who originally directed the stage adaptation of Matilda the Musical.

As well as Matthew Warchus, original playwright Dennis Kelly is back at the helm of this new version and is writing the screenplay.

And we haven't heard if Tim Minchin, who wrote the music and lyrics for Matilda the Musical, will be back yet.

The classic children's story centres around Matilda Wormwood, a young girl with telekinetic powers who uses her gifts for good, to play pranks on her neglectful parents and fight back against bullies.

Not only that, but Matilda is also a child genius and avid reader, often escaping to the library to get away from her parents.

When Matilda starts going to school, she learns to stand up to the bullies in her life, including evil headmistress Miss Trunchbull, with the help of her favourite teacher, Miss Honey.

What previous adaptations of Matilda have there been?

This isn't the first adaptation of the novel we've seen make it to the big screen.

A 1996 version starred Danny DeVito and Mara Wilson as our favourite child genius.

DeVito played Matilda's car salesman dad, while her mum was played by his real life wife Rhea Perlman.

Meanwhile, Miss Trunchbull was played by Pam Ferris and Miss Honey by Embeth Davidtz.

The stage musical has been running on the West End since 2010 and has proved such a success that it moved to Broadway from 2013 to 2017.

Doctor Foster's Bertie Carvel originally played Miss Trunchbull in the stage production.

This new film will have a lot to live up to!

Who is going to be in Matilda?

The biggest change of all is that Ralph Fiennes is attached to the role of Miss Trunchbull.

Fans of the musical won't be surprised to hear this though as, in the stage version, Trunchbull's role is also played by a man.

Having played Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise, the actor is no stranger to playing the bad guy so if this is true, then we can't wait!

According to LadBible, Jodie Comer is tipped to play the role of Miss Honey.

The Killing Eve star is the favourite to take on the role of the sweet-natured teacher.

Emma Stone was previously linked to this role, however, so we'll have to wait to see who plays Matilda's - and our - favourite teacher.

There are no reports as yet as to who will play Matilda's parents, Mr and Mrs Wormwood, Bruce Bogtrotter or Matilda herself.

What else do we know?

As well as the film adaptation of the stage musical, an animated adaptation of Matilda and other Roald Dahl stories is on the way.

Netflix is in talks to adapt children's classics such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG. We can't wait!
