Lion King fans, big news. Disney is set to produce a live-action sequel to the 2019 remake.

The film was a huge success when it was released last year, grossing $1.6billion (£1.5million) worldwide, and although the plot is being kept under wraps, it's reported that Jeff Nathanson, who penned the first script, has "completed an initial draft".

How exciting!

According to Deadline, the story will delve deeper into certain characters, including Mufasa's origin story, and will be directed by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins.

The cast is also yet to be announced, although we've got everything crossed that some of the stars from the first film will return.

The original live-action remake included Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), John Oliver (Zazu), Donald Glover (Simba), Beyoncé (Nala), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa) and Billy Eichner (Timon).

So we're expecting big things from the sequel!

But sadly, it may be some time since the movie gets underway. Jenkins is currently working on another Disney project - a biopic of Alvin Ailey - as well as an adaptation of the The Underground Railroad for Amazon Prime Video.

Speaking about Disney and The Lion King, Jenkins said: "Helping my sister raise two young boys during the '90s, I grew up with these characters.

"Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true."

Meanwhile, Jenkins' partner, director Lulu Wang, posted a mega adorable video yesterday evening in light of the news, of their pooch posing as Simba.

Disney's latest live-action remake is Mulan, which was released straight onto Disney+ this year. They are also working on remakes of The Little Mermaid and Pinnocchio which are expected to be released over the next couple of years.

We don't know which one we're most excited for!
