Actor Patrick Dempsey has confirmed he will be returning to the Enchanted set for its upcoming sequel, Disenchanted.

The followup to the hit 2007 Disney movie has been hotly anticipated for years, although it was officially confirmed by Disney+ last year.

The first instalment saw Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) transform from a cartoon into a real woman and then face the hustle and bustle of a life in New York, all while falling for cynical divorce lawyer Robert (Dempsey), and turning him into a true believer.

Now it has been announced that Grey's Anatomy star Dempsey will be joining Adams in the sequel (which should come as no surprise seeing as - SPOILER ALERT - they got married at the end of the last film.)

The Enchanted sequel has been in development for a long, long time but it seems like this announcement is the "happily ever after" fans have been waiting for. The sequel was confirmed to be in development in 2011, then in 2016 and again in March of last year.

Hinting that things were finally getting off the ground, Dempsey said on Good Morning America: "I just got this script for the second movie, and then I'm starting to go through and get notes together".

The actor went on to reveal that production teams hoped to start filming Disenchanted in spring, should Covid-19 permit.

While we don't yet know anything else about the cast of the sequel, we know that Adam Shankman is set to direct. Shankman is also set to direct the highly anticipated sequel to Hocus Pocus, so he's got a busy schedule, of late!

Actor James Marsden (Dead To Me) is also rumoured to be making a comeback as Prince Edward - although this is not yet confirmed.

Enchanted was a huge hit upon release in 2007, grossing $340.5 million at the box office. The film blends live action and traditionally animated scenes, focusing on an archetypical Disney Princess who is forced out of her whimsical, animated Disney fairy tale land into the live-action hustle and bustle of New York City.

The film is essentially Disney's homage to itself, making numerous references to Disney's classic animated tales such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty.

The star studded cast also includes Susan Sarandon, Frozen's Idina Menzel and Julie Andrews as the narrator. We do not know whether any of them will return for the sequel (yet) but we have our fingers crossed.

Enchanted received two nominations at the 65th Golden Globe Awards and three Best Original Song nominations at the 80th Academy Awards for 'Happy Working Song', 'So Close' and 'That's How You Know'.

Disenchanted will premiere on Disney+. We don't yet know when it's being released but we'll update you as sure as there's more info!
