Set your reminders, true crime addicts, because the second season of Dirty John lands on Netflix on Friday 14th August - and boy are we glad the wait is over.

The first season (as if you needed reminding) focused on the true story of confidence trickster John Meehan and the woman he abused and manipulated, Debra Newell.

Prior to Netflix's dramatisation of Dirty John - which starred Connie Britton and Eric Ban - came the phenomenally successful LA Times podcast of the same name, hosted by award-winning journalist Christopher Goffrey.

Featuring the real voices of Debra Newell and her family, the podcast has been downloaded over 50 million times.

Season two, Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, stars Amanda Peet and Christian Slater, and is based on the real-life case of Betty and Dan Broderick.

Intrigued? Allow us to walk you through the bare bones of the story.

Born in 1947, Betty (maiden name Bisceglia) came from a strict Roman Catholic family and was raised with traditional values.

She later met Dan Broderick, who would become her husband, while studying the University of Notre Dame in 1965.

The couple had five children together, with Betty supporting Dan during his time at law school and becoming the main breadwinner of the family.

Dan went on to scoop a role at one of San Diego's top law firms, and the family moved into a 'picket fence' fantasy home in the American suburbs.

But things took a turn for the ugly when Dan's affair with his legal assistant, Linda Kolkena (Rachel Heller) was exposed.

What followed was one of the messiest divorces in American history, dragged out over a period of five years.

Why so drawn out? Well, Dan's position as a big-name local lawyer made it hard for Betty to find legal representation in the divorce.

There are theories that Dan also used his legal influence to sell the couple's home and win sole custody of their children.

Once the divorce was finalised, Dan married Linda - but the saga was far from over.

Betty's behaviour became increasingly volatile. She left abusive messages on Dan and Linda's answering machine, vandalised their house, and even drove her car through the front door in the knowledge her children were inside the property.

Then, on 5 November 1989, Betty broke into Dan and Linda's home, and fatally shot them both as they slept in their bed.

She was convicted of the crime in 1991 and received a sentence of 32 years-to-life in jail.

Now aged 72, she is still serving her prison sentence.

The trailer voiceover narrates: "Divorce is the closest most people will come to war in their lives.

"And that is what war is: who controls who. If you don't control them, they control you."

Netflix, you do spoil us. We're very ready for this addictive-sounding second season.
