We cannot wait for the long-anticipated Dexter revival - and the new series just got even better.

It has now been announced by Showtime, the new home of Dexter, that veteran actor Clancy Brown has been signed to play Dexter's main villain in the reboot.

You may recognise the 62-year-old star from the 1994 classic The Shawshank Redemption, where he played Captain Byron Hadley, or as General Wade in The Flash. He has also voiced a number of iconic characters, including Mr. Krabs in the Spongebob Squarepants series.

Playing Kurt Caldwell, the "unofficial mayor" of the quaint town of Iron Lake, Clancy's new character is described as "loved" by citizens, and "realised the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop.

"Powerful, generous, loved by everyone - he's a true man of the people. If he's got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you."

Yikes, looks as if Dexter will be facing off against a particularly fierce rival this time round.

The casting comes after Dexter star Michael C. Hall, who plays the serial killer of killers, hopes the revival may be able to rectify the show's "disappointing" ending when it originally wrapped in 2013.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, he explained: "Let's be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there's always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling.

"I include myself in the group of people that wondered, 'What the hell happened to that guy?' So I'm excited to step back into it. I've never had that experience of playing a character this many years on."

In case you forgot, the last we saw of Dexter was in season eight, where he faked his own death and was living under a new name as a solitary lumberjack in Oregon.

Michael C. Hall is the only original cast member who has officially signed up for the revived series, which will be comprised of 10 episodes. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips will also helm the new series.
