Oh, what's occurring? The first reviews of the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special are here, that's what.

Yes, rustle up an omelette to rival Gwen's and settle in, because series creators James Corden and Ruth Jones are bringing the great and the good of Barry Island and Billericay back for a Christmas special.

A selection of lucky movie buffs attended a private press screening of the episode - and we won't lie to you, critics are loving it.

Returning nearly 10 years after the hit TV show aired, the Christmas Special picks up where the final series left off. As finales go, it delivered. There was wedding crashing. There was pregnancy. There was Nessa in bronze PVC bridalwear.

Smithy (Corden) stopped Nessa (Jones) from marrying Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) at the eleventh hour - but would their romance blossom?

Gavin (Matthew Horen) and Stacey (Joanna Page) discovered they were expecting a baby - but would they choose to raise their family in Barry or Billericay?

While the storyline of the upcoming Christmas Special remains under wraps, fans will be pleased to hear that the reception from press has been glowingly positive.

Empire Editor-in-Chief Terri White was bowled over. "Saw the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special today," she tweeted. "I adored it originally and honestly was nervous as f*ck. So much at stake. But all I'll say is that it's... exquisite. There's been no finer writing on screen this year."

Heat's Boyd Hilton agreed. "The new Gavin and Stacey is a total joy. You'll laugh. You'll cry. Delivers on every level."

While television journalist Nick Cannon wrote: "The #GavinandStacey Christmas special is an absolute joy. What a treat to sit through and laugh out loud. I loves them all I do..."

In a joint statement shared earlier this year, co-creators Ruth and James said:

'Over the last ten years we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special. 'We've loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.'

In the worlds of Pamela Shipman, "Oh my Christ!" We. Can't. Wait.

The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special is set to air on Christmas Day on BBC One.
