Thirteen years on from the original movie and Cloverfield is finally getting a sequel.

While the sci-fi film has had two spin-off movies in the years since - 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox - although in the same universe, they have not been direct sequels to the first movie.

But now our prayers have finally been answered...

The film was a huge success when it aired in 2008 (

If you need a recap (it has been over a decade, after all) the original 2008 film was set in New York and used the 'found footage' style to depict the story of a group of twenty somethings trying to survive during a monster attack.

Starring Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, Odette Annable and Lizzy Caplan, the movie begins at Rob's leaving party, but things take a creepy turn when an unknown alien creature invades the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake.

10 Cloverfield Lane was released in 2016 (

The film was a huge success, and went on to gross $172million (£125.6million) worldwide.

And while fans waited patiently for a sequel to the film, two spin-offs followed, both set in the Cloverfield universe.

Released eight years later, in 2016, was 10 Cloverfield Lane while The Cloverfield Paradox followed two years later.

Although the former was well received, The Cloverfield Paradox had disappointing reviews and many believed the door had been closed on any future sequels and spin-offs.

However, news of the upcoming sequel has delighted fans, with many taking to social media to say they can't wait for a second instalment.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Barton - aka writer of the new The Batman spin off - will be working on the script, while JJ Abrams will be returning to produce. The movie is expected to be shot in the traditional way, as opposed to the found footage style seen in the original.

There are no details of when production may begin at present, but as soon as we hear anything, you'll be the first to know!
