Clifford the Big Red Dog was always one of our favourite books when we were growing up, and next year Clifford will be making his live-action, big screen debut.

Now, the first teaser has been released - but the clip has received a mixed reception so far. In fact, fans are not happy at all.

You can check out the teaser below:

Many people are disappointed with Clifford's new CGI look, his "spray-painted" red fur and his size, or lack thereof.

One person tweeted commented on how small Clifford is and whether the movie's producers should have chosen to make Clifford a different breed. "Ugh, I loved Clifford. This is not Clifford. His dog house was as big as Emily Elizabeth's house. Also, should have made Clifford a Pitbull. You had a chance to use Pitbull features that could help break a stigma. But naw. Cash grab for funzies I guess. R. I. P. Clifford," they said.

Someone else added: "I Just realised I never processed that a live-action Clifford the Big Red Dog would feature a literal big red dog until right now".

Another disappointed viewer compared the situation to the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action/animation film that came out earlier this year. After its first trailer dropped, fans were were vocal about their disappointment towards Sonic's design. Paramount, the studio behind Sonic and the upcoming Clifford film, eventually changed the character's design after fan's complaints. He said: "You know how you fixed Sonic, Paramount you might want to do the same here."

A fan concurred with the Sonic similarities, tweeting a picture of the two furry animated characters side by side, stating: "I think Clifford should get the Sonic treatment".

Another Twitter user questioned Clifford's size, "Why is Clifford the size of two dogs standing on top of each other when Clifford was the size of an apartment complex!!"

Similarly, one person gave a hot take on Clifford's red fur. "The red looks spray painted on," they said. "I know [his] whole thing is being red, but maybe if they mixed in a bit more brown, it'd be aesthetically pleasing".

There was some support for Clifford, with one person responding to people's tweets of disappointment with "Not y'all getting upset that Clifford The Big Red Dog actually looks LIKE A BIG RED DOG!"

Similarly, someone else added: "I'm confused what people were expecting? He's a big red dog. They animated a big red dog."

The official description reads: "As Emily Elizabeth (Darby Camp) struggles to fit in at home and at school, she discovers a small red puppy who is destined to become her best friend.

"When Clifford becomes a gigantic dog and attracts the attention of a genetics company, Emily and her Uncle Casey (Jack Whitehall) have to fight the forces of greed as they go on the run across New York City. Along the way, Clifford affects the lives of everyone around him and teaches Emily and her uncle the true meaning of acceptance and unconditional love."

Development for the film began all the way back in 2012 and it was filmed in 2019.

Clifford the Big Red Dog starred in his very own cartoon between 2000-2003 (

The film is based on a series of children's books, also titled Clifford the Big Red Dog, by Norman Bridwell. First published in 1963, Clifford is a giant red Labrador retriever whose adventures spawned over 40 books.

A 65-episode cartoon aired between 2000 and 2003 and a prequel, showing Clifford as a puppy ran for 39 episodes between 2003 and 2006.

An animated film, Clifford's Really Big Movie, was released in 2004.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is set to premiere on 5 November 2021.
