Fight Club, the 1999 Brad Pitt-starring American drama, has achieved cult classic status in the last 20 years - but there's no question it's brimming with high testosterone action and overwhelming male energy.

Women competing in rough and ready sports such as fighting is something we hardly ever seen in cinema - but that could all be about to change.

A new indie film, Chick Fight, is in the works and it tells the story of an all-female fight club.

The film stars and will be produced by Malin Akerman, while Bella Thorne (Amityville: The Awakening and The Babysitter) and Alec Baldwin (The Aviator and The Departed) also star.

According to Deadline, the film tells the story of Anna (played by Ackerman), a coffee shop owner who is struggling with the recent death of her beloved mother and her father coming out as gay.

To make matters worse, she accidentally burns down her coffee shop after flicking a cigarette on a spilled bottle of alcohol.

At rock bottom, her best friend takes her to an all-women underground fight club where she meets an eclectic cast of characters.

Olivia (Thorne) is the club's "intimidatingly perfect and most brutally efficient fighter", who quickly becomes a rival to Anna, both in and out of the ring.

Anna is helped by solitary trainer Jack Murphy (Baldwin), who helps Anna find "her inner strength and true purpose in the most primal of ways".

Paul Leyden is directing, and the script is being written by Joseph Downey.

Akerman - whose credits include Couples Retreat and The Proposal - is producing the film with Yale Productions' Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman and Michael J. Rothstein, Idiot Savant's Anne Clements, and Ash Christian.

Executive producers include Tiffany Boyle, Elsa Ramo, and Yale's Russ Posternak, Jon Keeyes and Jesse Korman as co-producers.

Akerman took to Instagram to express her joy at having Bella Thorne and Alec Baldwin on board.

"So very excited to have these two talents join our little movie. It's gonna be a blast!!!," she wrote.

Thorne seemed equally as excited, writing: "She. Won't stop. Always wanted to do a fighting movie."
