With the countdown to Christmas truly underway, it's time to start planning our festive TV schedule and there's one series in particular we can't wait to sink our teeth into - A Christmas Carol.

This December, the BBC is treating viewers to a three-part re-imagination of Charles Dickens' classic novel, which is executive produced by Tom Hardy and written by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight.

And in anticipation of the show, we've delved deep to find out everything we can about it before it airs next month.

What do we know about the series?

The three-part series is based on Charles Dickens' renowned novel A Christmas Carol, where Ebenezer Scrooge goes on a journey to becoming a better man after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

A Christmas Carol has been made into countless films and TV series over the years, most notably by The Muppets, but this new BBC creation promises to be 'original'.

The new festive series will feature three hour-long episodes that will be shown on the BBC in the UK, while our American-counterparts will be able to view it on FX. The broadcasters previously collaborated on Hardy's last TV project Taboo.

Describing the upcoming series, BBC said it is "a haunting, hallucinatory, spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge's dark night of the soul."

We're guessing there won't be a cameo from Ms Piggy so?

Who's behind the show?

The three-part series has been written by Peaky Blinders director Steven Knight while Tom Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, Kate Crowe and Mona Qureshi are the show's executive producers.

The Awakening filmmaker Nick Murphy will direct the TV adaptation.

When the series was announced, actor Tom said in a BBC statement: "It's extremely exciting to have the opportunity to team up with Ridley Scott, Steven Knight and our partners at the BBC with this rare and wonderful opportunity to revisit and interpret Dickens' classic works.

"A Christmas Carol is a fabulous magical piece of theatre and an embarrassment of riches for our creative team - from character all the way through to design.

"Here's to having a lot of intricate and wonderful fun. We feel very lucky."

While Steven Knight shared: "This production of A Christmas Carol will respectfully present what we believe to be a timely interpretation of a timeless story."

It is the first in a series of the author's tales to be re-imagined for the small screen after the Controller of BBC Drama, Piers Wenger, commissioned a number of Dickens' stories for the broadcaster earlier this year.

Who will star in the festive series?

The seasonal series has attracted a wealth of big Hollywood names with Guy Pearce playing Scrooge.

Line of Duty actor Stephen Graham, who plays Jacob Marley, and Peaky Blinders star Charlotte Riley as Lottie as well as Andy Serkis, who will take on the role of the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Other noticeable names include The Favourite's Joe Alwyn as Bob Cratchit, Vinette Robinson, who plays Mary Cratchit, X-Men's Jason Flemyng as Ghost of Christmas Future.

When will the show air?

Sorry TV fans, but the BBC are yet to announce the exact date when A Christmas Carol will air. But what we do know is that it is expected to be released in the run-up to Christmas - so not long to go!

We can't wait.
