Production has begun at Aardman Animations for the much anticipated Chicken Run sequel.

The movie was announced last April, and fans have been waiting ever since for news on when it would be coming.

Now, Will Becher, co-director of Aardman's latest film A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, has finally confirmed it is under way.

Speaking to Flickering Myth, he said: "Well, all I can tell you is that there were a lot of chickens being made towards the end of our film.

"We have a model-making team and, at one point, it was just full of sheep, but slowly over the course of the following weeks it became overrun with chickens.

"So there is definitely an intention there and it was announced they are in pre-production on a sequel."

He added: "It's the first film I ever worked on at Aardman. It has affected so many people.

"Just talking to journalists around the world, everyone is very excited by the prospect of a follow-up. Watch this space. That's all I'll say."

It still hasn't been confirmed whether Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha will make a comeback to voice their iconic characters in the yet-to-be-named sequel.

We do know that OG writers Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell will be back again to work on the screenplay, so it's bound to be full of many more cracking lines we'll be reciting for years to come.

The plot of Chicken Run sees a group of chickens, including Ginger and Rocky, trying to flee their roost in the Yorkshire Dales to "freeeedom!"

The farm is run by The Tweedy family, who are plotting to turn all the chickens into pies.

Chicken Run raked in $255 million at the box office when it was released in 2000, and was the highest grossing stop-motion animated film in history.
