It may have been 14 years since we first watched High School Musical, but we're still crushing hard for Zac Efron.

The 33-year-old actor, who has since appeared in a number of more mature roles, is gearing up to start filming a brand new survival thriller.

Titled Gold, the movie follows "two strangers travelling through a desert who stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found" according to Deadline.

"After hatching a plan on how to secure their bounty, one man leaves to secure the necessary equipment," the plot line reads. "The other man remains and must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs and mysterious intruders, whilst battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate."

Shooting will begin on this must-see blockbuster in Australia later this month.

Speaking about the new project, Anthony Hayes said in a statement: "This is an exciting, gripping and timely tale about greed, humanity, who we are, what we've done to the world and where we are heading if we aren't careful.

"To have Zac Efron as my main man on this film is an absolute gift and to see what he is creating already is like nothing we've seen from him before. I can't wait to deliver this bold, visceral and cinematic film to audiences all around the world."

Zac's recent films include Dirty Grandpa, The Greatest Showman and Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile.

As of yet, no other actors have been cast in Gold.

If this Zac news has got you hankering for more High School Musical, we've got some good news - you can now do High School Musical workouts at home.

Created by PT and fitness instructor, Emily (aka emkfit on YouTube), the HSM HIIT sessions features music from all three movies for you to sweat to.

Each workout lasts around 12-13 minutes and begins with a warm-up, followed by a couple of HIIT moves. Combining our Zac Efron fascination with a tough workout? Lockdown just got a whole lot more interesting...
