Bridgerton has officially been renewed for a Season 2, with production starting this spring.

Netflix confirmed the news today, following the monumental success of the show's first season which dropped on the streaming platform on Christmas Day.

"Bridgerton *will* return for a second season," the streaming giant said. "Prepare for another social season."

The second instalment of the steamy period drama is set to focus on Daphne's brother Anthony and his pursuit of a wife, according to an intriguing 'pamphlet' written by none other than Lady Whistledown that's circulating on social media.

The news, announced on Thursday, has predictably sent fans into meltdown on social media.

It's the news fans have been waiting for ever since the eight-episode Regency drama debuted last year. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the show - which is based on a series of books by Julia Quinn - was projected to reach 63 million households within 28 days of its release.

Adding to its success, the drama has also reached the number one spot on Netflix's top 10 rankings in a whopping 76 countries.

Rumours that the show could be renewed first emerged a few weeks ago, when creator Chris Van Dusen confirmed he would definitely up for making more, explaining that there are plenty of stories to tell.

Speaking to Collider, he said: "I feel like the first season was primarily about Daphne and her love story with Simon.

"But, this being a family of eight children and there being eight books, I would love to be able to focus and really tell stories and love stories for all the Bridgerton siblings. For each character, for sure."

When asked if that would potentially mean eight seasons, he replied: "I would love that. In success, I would love that."

Even cast members have previously spoken out about being onboard for a Season 2, so we're hoping some of our favourite faces will return.

Phoebe Dynevor (who plays Daphne Bridgerton) told Elle: "I want to see Daphne get involved in Anthony's love life a bit, as he sort of meddled with hers quite a lot," she said. "I think that will be fun."

Meanwhile Regé-Jean Page, who plays Daphne's husband Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, explained he would like to see how their marriage evolves in a potential next season.

"As far as continuing to explore characters, I think that love is an evolving thing," he told TV Guide. "It's a living, breathing thing that needs tending, that needs looking after, that needs mending when it gets worn or torn.

"They get married very young. They still have a lot of growing to do. They have a lot to do, and I think it'll always be fun to watch them do that together."

It's expected the second season will focus on Anthony Bridgerton (

The second Bridgerton book, The Viscount Who Loved Me, focuses on eldest son Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey.

Set a year after the events of the first book, titled The Duke and I, Anthony has decided it's time for him to settle down. However, things don't quite go to plan when he sets his sights on Edwina Sheffield.

Edwina has an older half sister, Kate, who after hearing about Anthony's reputation, is desperate to put a stop to the match.

But after months of bickering, Anthony and Kate find themselves increasingly drawn to one another. Despite fighting their desire, in the end they simply cannot.

Of course, the TV adaptation could have some differences here and there, but it's expected Season 2 will have all the binge-watching qualities of the first instalment - and we cannot wait!
