The news that BBC One has renewed the hit show, which is based on Philip Pullman's novels, was confirmed on the official His Dark Materials Twitter page alongside a photo of lead characters Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) from the back with the caption: "The journey continues. #HisDarkMaterials will return for a third season."
We can look forward to eight more episodes, with production beginning in Cardiff, Wales in 2021.

For those who need a little refresh, season two followed Lyra, a brave young girl from another world, who is distraught over the death of her best friend. Having embarked on a journey to a strange and mysterious new city, she meets a guy called Will, who is also escaping his past.
The pair then set out on a mission to reunite Will with his father, but of course there is plenty of drama along the way. The show also stars Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter, who continues her efforts to bring Lyra home.
Season two series regulars also include Ariyon Bakare, Andrew Scott, Will Keen, Ruta Gedmintas and Lin-Manuel Miranda. New cast members this season included Terence Stamp, Jade Anouka and Simone Kirby.
If the third season follows the Amber Spyglass novel, we can expect to see some exciting new worlds on our screens, including the world of the elephant-like mulefa and the land of the dead, while we should also see Lyra and Will getting closer, too.
We can't wait for this one - bring on 2021!
