The first episode of BBC One's Doctor Foster spin-off Life dropped on Tuesday night - and impressed viewers took to Twitter to praise one performance in particular.

Playing out across six episodes, the series follows Annabelle - the neighbour of Suranne Jones' character Gemma in the hugely popular 2015 show - after she leave her hometown to start a new life.

A stellar line of actors star in the programme, from Victoria Hamilton to Adrian Lester - but going by the fan reaction, it was Gavin & Stacey favourite Alison Steadman's performance that stole the show.

Alison plays Gail, a 70-year-old woman who is questioning her marriage to husband Henry (Peter Davidson), who continually puts her down in public under the guise of having a good joke.

Fans heaped praise on Alison's performance, calling it 'outstanding' and 'deserving of a BAFTA', while others called the screen star 'a national treasure'.

"Alison Steadman deserves a BAFTA for Life," wrote one superfan.

While another commented: "God that first episode of #Life was absolutely bl**dy incredible, Alison Steadman is a delight."

Elsewhere, viewers praised the new series - which explores the theme of loneliness in cities - for its 'superb line up' and 'twists'.

Others, meanwhile, said they were 'addicted' to the drama.

2015's Doctor Foster was watched by an audience of more than 10 million, so it's fair to say that Life has a lot to live up to - but going by these comments, it's more than doing the job!
