'GBBO' Fans Are Dubbing Cringeworthy Cake Toppling Fail 'Worse Than Baked Alaska-gate'

It was TENSE.

Households across the country collectively gasped last night when watching The Great British Bake Off - and it wasn't just at Matt Lucas' BoJo impression.

Yep, if you thought Baked-Alaska gate was bad, we've now been treated to a brand new 2020 version. Pineapple Upside Down Cake-gate.

The first episode of the Channel 4 baking show saw the contestants tasked with making the retro fruity dessert for the technical challenge, before presenting them to Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith to be blind tasted.

But then, disaster struck. Watch the clip below:

In case you missed it, Sura saw a fly hovering above her cakes, so swatted it out of the way.

However, in the process she knocked all of Dave's desserts onto the floor, where they crashed and crumbled into smithereens.

(This show really is the gift that keeps on giving...)

The moment was as awkward as you'd expect, and - while he tried to remain calm - Dave's face said it all.

The group scrambled to assemble the remnants of his cakes, but only two had remained on the tray to be examined.

Ever the gent, Dave didn't kick off or lose his temper, and Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas assured the group that Paul and Prue would be warned of what happened, but poor Sura was still left sobbing because she was so mortified about what she'd done.

"Omg this is worse than baked Alaska-gate!!! #gbbo," one viewer said, referencing the moment Diana Beard threw away Ian Watters' Baked Alaska back in 2014.

"It's baked Alaska gate all over again! #gbbo," another concurred.

Others were just happy to see that episode one was as chaotic as they'd hoped.

"Episode one of Bake Off and there's already been a sponge related sabotage. I am grinning in absolute elation. This might save 2020," wrote another.

As a fourth chipped in: "Who knew that it would take a Bake Off contestant knocking someone else's pineapple upside down cakes onto the floor to make me feel something in lockdown? #GBBO".

To make matters even more cringeworthy, Sura went on to win the technical challenge, but she was so gutted for Dave she couldn't even crack a smile.

Luckily, all was forgotten as the episode went on, and there were no hard feelings.

And, hey, one thing's for sure...she certainly put the 'upside down' in his Upside-Down Cake.
