Sister Act fans can get excited, as it looks like there may be a third movie in the making.

Details are also slowly being cascaded out to fans, but some people might not be too happy.

The 1992 original film centred on Whoopi Goldberg's lounge singer character, who was forced to join a convent, after she was placed in a witness protection programme and needed to hide from a mob.

Whoopi won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, and the flick generated $232 millionworldwide.

Sister Act also starred Maggie Smith and Harvey Keitel, and there has already been one sequel in 1993, Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit, which grossed $57 million in the US, as well as a Broadway musical.

Most of the original cast reprised their roles in the sequel, Whoopi included, but if you were hoping the same thing might happen again, then don't hold your breath.

Whoopi has already revealed some details on the third movie during a recent TV appearance, and by the sounds of things, she will barely be in it at all.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the actress explained: "We've been all over Disney begging. They've decided that they're going to go in a different direction with Sister Act.

"So it won't be Sister Act 3 it will be a brand new rendition of, and I guess I'll walk through a scene and that's how they'll say I was part of it."

So, this new flick won't be a second sequel, but more of a remake.

Rumours have suggested that Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah could be writing the screenplay, and Allison Shearmur may be producing.

While fans may be disappointed at a lack of Whoopi, the actress has said she was open to others taking on the role of Deloris.

"I think that there will be a Sister Act 3. But I don't know that I would be Deloris, which is okay, because it's time for someone [else] to do it," she explained.

"But it's such a fun piece that I'm hoping someone will do it. Maybe I'll direct it."
