Marcella actress Anna Friel has revealed she would love a Marcella and Luther crossover - and we are so up for this.

Anna, who will reprise her role as Marcella Backland in the third season of the ITV drama later this month, suggested mixing her character's world with that of Idris Elba's DCI John Luther.

How great would that be!

Speaking to Digital Spy she said: "The only time you see crossovers is in superhero movies. I've never seen shows where they amalgamate characters from show to show. That would be quite rewarding to fans. But it's only in my head.

"She could very much [be his nemesis]. Who'd be the bravest? They'd probably fall in love, I think," said Anna.

Anna also joked about getting Dame Helen Mirren involved as her Prime Suspect character Jane Tennison.

While creator Neil Cross has recently explained there are no plans for a sixth season of Luther, he has said there is something exciting on the horizon, although he couldn't spill the beans just yet.

"But Idris, [director] Jamie Payne, and I will shortly have some exciting news to share," he added. "There's gonna be more later, but it's not going to be season six."

Idris meanwhile, has been speaking about a potential Luther movie for the last two years, and confirmed it is happening a few months ago.

"I've maintained that I'd like to see [Luther] come to a film," he said at the BAFTA TV Awards earlier this year.

"That's what I think we're headed towards, is a film. I'm looking forward to making that happen... It is happening! With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther."

Meanwhile, the third season of Marcella will air on ITV on Tuesday 26th January. The eight-part series will pick up where it left off in Season 2, after that explosive scene in which Marcella sliced the side of her face, chopped off all her hair and was living under a bridge.

Entering Season 3, Marcella (played by Anna Friel) is almost unrecognisable. With a choppy blonde bob and total style overhaul, viewers will see how Marcella - who now goes by the name of Keira Devlin - is working as an undercover detective in Belfast.

In a recent interview, Anna even hinted at the possibility of a fourth season.

"It was always meant to be a trilogy, Hans [Rosenfeldt] always meant for it to be that way. There's definitely room for it to grow and to continue but I don't think we're at that stage yet," she said.

"I know it's been really well received in the other 32 countries that it's aired in. A lot of them started on Season 3 and went back to Season 1 and 2."

And when asked if she would be up for continuing Marcella's story, Anna said: "I love Marcella, I'm very attached to her, it would take lots of discussions to say what now can we do with her, it's better to have three really strong seasons than a weaker one.

"But if someone came up with a really strong idea about where it could go. I could see her in South America, you could take her anywhere."

Fingers crossed!
