The spookiest day of the year almost upon us, and you may be on the hunt for a film to watch on the day as trick-or-treating looks to be sadly postponed/

With just so many scary films to choose from, a new report by thortful.com uncovers the top 10 scariest films for a hair-raising night in, with Alien, the 1979 sci-fi flick directed by Ridley Scott, coming out on top.

To find out which horror classic was the scariest they used data from IMdB for the top horror films, and normalised votes, ratings and metascore individually from 0 to 1, then summed them up to give the final index.

Set in outer space, Alien follows a crew who are terrorised by a deadly and aggressive alien.

The classic horror is followed closely by iconic silver-screen flick The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson

The film is best-known for its haunted hotel, creepy twins, and the sinister room 237.

Other cult classic horror films that have made the top 10 include The Exorcist. The 1973 supernatural horror film follows 12-year-old girl Regan (Linda Blair) who is possessed by a demon. Her mother attempts to save her by contacting two priests to perform an exorcism.

Dozens of frightening scenes have come from the film. From Regan crawling backwards down a staircase in her home, to projectile vomiting on the priests who attempt to save her - gross!

Naturally, it wouldn't be Halloween without the cinematic classic Halloween. The franchise features the infamous serial killer, Michael Myers.

The top ten scariest movies are:

The site also managed to make a list of the least scary horror films, with Prom Night coming out on top. Starring Brittany Snow, the film shows an obsessed teacher released from jail, who kills Snow's friends on (you guessed it!) the night of their prom.

Several supernatural films feature in the bottom 10, including The Devil Inside, Annabelle Comes Home, Boogeyman, The Unborn, and Ouijia.

1.Prom Night

2.The Devil Inside

3.Jaws 3-D

4.The Doll Comes Home

5.I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

6.Boogeyman

7.Wolf
