Season 2 of Ricky Gervais' dark comedy After Life has been a roaring success since landing on Netflix last month, so no one is surprised it's officially been renewed for a series 3.

The series, written by and starring Ricky, has been trending on the streaming service since it dropped and has received outstanding fan reviews, so its no wonder Netflix have locked the comedian in for a third run.

Announcing the news on his social channels, Ricky wrote: "Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at @Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat arse and do another season. This is all your fault."

This is pretty huge for the Golden Globes host, 58, as its the first time he'll be breaking his "two season rule", with past shows - The Office, Extras, Derek - only enjoying two seasons and a special.

However, he last confirmed in a live stream that season 3 will definitely be the "last one".

It seems Ricky has given in to pressure from fans who demanded he bring the show back from third instalment.

"I've been saying for a year now I've never had a reaction like it and that grew and grew," he said in a live stream after the show first went out.

"I'd love to do a season three for the first time ever, it looks like it's going to go down a storm, so if this reaction carries on then yes.

"The better it goes down the worse it is for me, you can do something f***ing amazing, and everyone goes: 'Oh god, it's the best thing ever, 10/10.'

"But if you do something else that is 9.5/10 people are like: 'It's f***ing awful, this is the worst show on television', so that's what goes through my mind."

In centres on Tony (Gervais) who is struggle to come to terms with his grief (

After Life had viewers hysterically sobbing and laughing simultaneously when season one hit Netflix in 2019.

The emotional comedy drama centres on Tony (played by Ricky Gervais), who is catapulted into crushing grief when his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman) loses her battle with cancer.

With it, Tony changes. Once a happy-go-lucky joker, he becomes bitter and even suicidal, angry at the world. Instead of killing himself, Tony decides to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes.

His devil-may-care attitude is like a 'super power' to Tony, but it turns out to be tricky when everyone around him is trying to save him.

Season 2 sees Tony trying his best to restart his life and be a better person and help the people who helped him, including his coworkers who are facing the local newspaper they work for shutting down.

Ashley Jensen also stars (

All the main cast members have returned, including Kerry Godliman (Lisa), Tom Basden (Matt), Tony Way (Lenny), David Bradley (Tony's dad Ray), Ashley Jensen (Emma), Penelope Wilton (Anne), David Earl (Brian), Joe Wilkinson (Pat), Mandeep Dhillon (Sandy), Jo Hartley (June), Roisin Conaty (Roxy), Tim Plester (Julian) and Diane Morgan (Kath).

If you haven't watched After Life 2 yet, we suggest you make it priority bank holiday viewing.
