A Live Action Rugrats Movie Has Been Confirmed

Rugrats was an integral part of any 1990s childhood. The popular cartoon, which aired for nine seasons between 1991 and 2004, was so successful it's already spawned three films and two spinoffs (All Grown Up! And Rugrats Pre-School Daze).

So it makes perfect sense to bring the show back for a millennial audience. And now it's official: Paramount Players are releasing a live-action/CG hybrid version of the popular show, and have already chosen a director.

David Bowers, who directed three of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, has been nabbed to direct the Rugrats project, and Karen Rosenfelt is producing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rugrats, originally on Nickelodeon, followed one-year-old Tommy Pickles and his adventures with friends Chuckie, Phil and Lil among others. The new iteration is intended for release on January 29th 2021, with David Goodman writing the script.

The babies will reportedly appear as CGI creations while the other characters are live-action. You may not have heard of director David Bowers, but he's the perfect choice for the job, as an animator who co-directed Flushed Away and Astro Boy before his work on the Wimpy Kid movies.

There were first reports of a Rugrats do-over over a year ago as part of Paramount's attempts to bring back our childhoods and make some money off old titles. Are You Afraid of the Dark? (remember that?) and Dora the Explorer will also appear on the big screen soon.

Variety reported last year that Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures would be relaunching the franchise with a 26-episode order and a live-action film that would feature beloved characters Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie and Angelina as well as a host of new characters.

Casting will be announced in due course, but we're mostly excited to see how they manage to pull off not making the babies look terrifying.

"Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures," said Sarah Levy, COO of Viacom Media Networks.

"What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can't wait for today's kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals," she added.

Reactions to both last and this year's announcements have been pretty mixed, with many people furious that Nickelodeon would mess with such a classic. However, maybe it's only fair that today's kids get to experience the same magic we once did.
