The fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why landed on the Netflix on Friday and fans of the series have been left in absolute bits.

Viewers who binge-watched the last leg of the hit show took to Twitter to say that they "couldn't stop crying" and had been left "heartbroken".

If you've yet to watch the show, it appears that a large box of tissues may be required.

For those who haven't yet seen it, here's a quick recap of where the last season left off.

Season three of the hit show - which is based on Jay Asher's novel - landed on Netflix in August 2019.

Since discovering the truth about Bryce Walker's (Justin Prentice) murder in the dramatic finale of the last season, fans have been chomping at the bit to find out what lies ahead for the Liberty High seniors.

Season four follows the group of teens as they prepare to graduate, facing "heart-breaking choices" that could change their future forever.

Happily, central cast members Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), Jessica (Alisha Boe), Alex (Miles Heizer) and Tyler (Devin Druid) return to screens for the final run.

Tensions inevitably rise as Clay (Dylan Minnette) and Justin (Brandon Flynn) and their fellow students are faced with the words "Monty was framed" spray-painted in huge red letters across the school - as shown in the official trailer.

Clay and his peers naturally becoming anxious that the secret behind Bryce Walker's death might come out, and the mood is tense.

Meanwhile, Dr. Robert Ellman (played by Gary Sinise) is called in to assess Clay's mental health.

With so many secrets buried deep, and plenty of juicy plot lines, we're not surprised that viewers have been left feeling all the emotions at once.

One distraught fan wrote: "The final season of 13 Reasons Why, holy shit. The final episode had me sobbing."

"Just finished the new season of 13 reasons why and I actually feel heartbroken," wrote another distressed viewer.

A third Twitter user who had pulled an all-nighter to watch the series said: "ok but it's 6am and i am sobbing bc the last episode of 13 reasons why."

While another chimed in to say: "@13reasonswhy why ya'll do that to me... I'm heartbroken now."

And it appears it's not just sentimental types who are affected.

A fan who insisted she didn't cry easily said of the finale: "i'm not the type of person to cry with anything but i finished watching 13 reasons why and i've never cried so much in my life..."

Wow. Consider yourselves warned, eh?

13 Reasons Why first dropped on Netflix in 2017. Season one and two centred on the suicide of a girl, Hannah Baker, played by Katherine Langford.

The graphic scenes showing Hannah's suicide caused controversy and were later edited out by producers. The episodes now also contain prompts to a resource website.

On the subject of the decision, Netflix said: "We've heard from many young people that 13 Reasons Why encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help - often for the first time.

"As we prepare to launch season three later this summer, we've been mindful about the ongoing debate around the show. So, on the advice of medical experts, including Dr. Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we've decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from season one."

The fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why is available to stream on Netflix now.
