Stormzy Dedicates His BRIT Award To The ‘Incredible Females’

You may well have noticed that the BRIT Awards were distinctly lacking female nominees last night.

There were 25 nominations available across four mixed gender categories, and yet only three women were in the running.

So we weren't the only ones cheering from our sofas at home when Stormzy used his Best Male Artist win to shout out the "incredible females" who had helped him get to where he was.

After landing the award over some incredible musicians such as Harry Styles, Michael Kiwanuka, Dave and Lewis Capaldi, he first and foremost thanked his mother and management for supporting him.

"I'm so happy, man," he said as he took to the podium.

But making a more serious point, he went on: "To be the best male, I have got the most incredible females in my team.

"You lot are the greatest, the best male is nothing without the best females. I love you guys. To every single person who supported me, I love you. Thank you guys."

Stormzy then named all the women who he had worked with on his record label directly, giving them the namecheck they deserve.

What an icon.

The speech was rightly praised on social media for making a small but very necessary wider point.

Taking to Twitter after watching, one BRITs viewer wrote: "Stormzy winning best male solo & giving credit to the amazing women in his team who help support him in his work is exactly the kind of acceptance speech I'm all for."

While another added: "That's how you acknowledge women in an awards speech. No tockenistic b*llsh*t. Behind every successful man... #stormzy #Brits2020"

A third agreed: "Everytime I see @stormzy I love him more. Thanking all women in his acceptance speech for Best Male. G'wannnn!".

The grime star wasn't the only male winner to reach out to the incredible women surrounding him last night.

Foals also used their Best Group acceptance speech to make an important point, with Yannis Philippakis saying: "Hopefully next year we'll see some more women in this category." Burn.

Maybe soon we won't need speeches like this, eh?
