Christmas has come early for Mariah Carey this year. The Official Charts company has announced that Mariah's festive season anthem, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is this week's number one on the UK Singles Chart, 26 years after its release.

Released in 1994 as the first single from her Christmas album, Merry Christmas, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' peaked at number two. It was blocked by another Christmas hit, 'Stay Another Day' by East 17.

Since its release, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has become an enduring staple for millions of people during the Christmas season. In fact, this week marks its 70th week in the UK Top 40.

The song also set a new chart record - no other song has spent more weeks in the Official Chart Top 40 before eventually reaching Number 1 in UK chart history. Incredible!

The UK clearly is in the festive spirit and with only two weeks until the big day, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has racked up 10.8 million streams in the past week (including many times by us!) giving the song the honour of achieving the most streams in a week by a song in 2020 so far. With only three weeks left, it's safe to say Mariah will probably keep this record.

It is also the UK's 84th best-selling song in history, selling 1.24 million pure sales since 1994 according to Official Charts Company data.

People around the world, especially in the UK, truly adore the song and it has become a fixture for Christmas parties, family gatherings (both pre-Covid ones IRL and virtual ones) and even Christmas themed workouts since. Since single sales shifted from CDs and cassette tapes to digital downloads and eventually streaming, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has returned to the Official Singles Chart every December since 2007.

In the last three years, the song has matched its original number two peak but 2020 is the year that the British public have finally sent it all the way to the top where it belongs. 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is Mariah Carey's third UK number one single after 'Without You' in 1994 and 'Against All Odds' in 2000 with Westlife. It marks her second solo number one and the first that is not a cover.
