On the day after Halloween, Mariah Carey posted a video to her 21.6m Twitter followers showing a ghoulish figure roaming through her mansion. It opens a door and we see Mariah sitting by her Christmas tree and the familiar jingles from her iconic Christmas smash hit 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' plays, merrily in the background. Which leads us to ask: When is it too early to start playing Christmas music?

According to a poll conducted on our Twitter account, only 28.1 per cent of people think it is acceptable to start playing Christmas music from 1st November like Mariah.

A whopping 58.8 per cent of people agreed that the right time to play Christmas music is a month later, the 1st of December.

Only 4.6 per cent of people put on their yuletide playlists on Christmas Eve.

However 8.5 per cent of people responded to "start? I never stopped..." suggesting they in the merry Christmas spirit all year round.

They may not be the only ones who like to start the Chrimbo sing-a-long earlier than most. In August this year, the radio station Magic launched its 100% Christmas station, exactly four months before Christmas Day. The station claimed they launched the station, which will play Christmas music non-stop, extra early this year because the nation has had quite a tough time of it due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, the main Magic radio station switched from playing old school classics to non-stop Christmas songs in December, and they previously operated a dedicated Christmas music station on DAB radio in addition to the main service!

Joining the party a little later after Magic, Heart Xmas launched early - or late for those who adore festive tunes - on the same day British Summer Time (BST) ended and the clocks changed. This was more than 60 days before the big day itself.

If you have already begun getting into the Christmas spirit by playing your favourite Christmas songs, there's one particular tune you have likely heard already. One of the most popular Christmas songs ever is 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey - with the extra festive number having a revival last year.

In 2019, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the US for the first time, 25 years after its original release, thus breaking several records (including the longest trip to number one).

With estimated sales of over 16 million copies, it remains the best-selling Christmas single by a female artist and one of the best-selling singles of all time.

At the time of this article, the song has broken into the top 40 on UK Spotify at number 31 and is trending on YouTube at number 17. People are clearly getting into the Christmas spirit as early as possible!

Last week we asked Tyla readers if it's too early to start watching Christmas films. Luckily for those of us who are already feeling festive, 66.1 per cent of respondents said it's not too soon to snuggle up at home and put on a Christmas movie.

Just like the people who said they had not stopped playing Christmas music, seven per cent of respondent saying they started flicking through movies back in July.

According to a Reddit thread, the most acceptable time to start watching Elf, Christmas with the Cranks, The Nightmare Before Christmas and all the other classics is after Thanksgiving, which is on 26th November this year.

But for us Brits, why not start extra, extra, early? Bring on Christmas!
