An American mum has gone viral for her video on how to make a British cup of tea, which seemingly serves no other purpose than to make us really, really sad.

The culprit, an American woman named Michelle who is living in the UK, decided to post tutorial on how to whip up a nice soothing cup of 'hot tea' or 'British tea' with her 167,000 TikTok followers.

Recruiting the help of her daughter Mykela, the mother-daughter duo begin by filling up a mug with cold water and putting it in the microwave for one minute.

Mykela then pours a fair few enormous glugs of milk in the cup before throwing in a tea bag. "Add the sugar," her mother says in the voiceover, as she proceeds to pour approximately a kilogram of the sweetener into the cup.

"And that's how you make a hot tea," Michelle says while proudly holding up her cup of watery milk and grinning as if she hasn't just committed one of the biggest crimes to nature.

We're lost for words.

Understandably, we aren't alone in our dismay - swathes of Brits reacted with both horror and confusion at the video, leaving their thoughts in the comments.

"NO NO NO NO!!!!!!! IM GONNA CRY," wrote one, visibly triggered.

"This is a crime," asserted another, with another adding: "I cried real tears watching this."

"NONONONO. MICROWAVE THE WATER?!?! WHY???" cried another.

As well all know, tea-making is a kind of art form in the UK and the process has laid ground for many heated debates on which order the ingredients should be added.

We might fight over whether the hot water or milk should go in first, but surely we're can all agree Michelle and Mykela's method is plain wrong?!

Sorry ladies, but it's a hard pass from us.
