Oh Prue, honey, no.

Prue Leith was left red-faced last night after a gamble she took on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? went horribly wrong.

The 80-year-old had stormed through the early rounds of the quiz show, and had made it through to the £64,000 question.

However, the Bake Off judge, who was playing for charity, felt herself most certainly hit an iceberg after she was left struggling over a question about the Titanic.

After host Jeremy Clarkson asked: "Which of these senior crew members on RMS Titanic survived the sinking?", Prue was left grappling between the four answers before using her phone-a-friend lifeline.

Her nephew Sam was also unsure, but added that he was "fairly sure" it wouldn't be Captain Edward Smith.

After then using her 50/50 lifeline, Prue decided to opt for Captain Edward Smith despite her nephew's doubts.

And it proved to be the wrong answer, with the Bake Off judge losing £48,000, after she set her safety net at £16,000.

Jeremy, in his usual blunt manner, told Prue the round "was a disaster", while viewers at home were up in arms about the baker's decision.

Fans were mostly stunned that Prue was seemingly unaware of the old adage: 'The captain always goes down with his ship.'

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: "Prue Leith's performance on who wants to be a millionaire Xmas special - picking the captain as the surviving member of the Titanic sinking????

"Oh Prue !! The Captain Is ALWAYS the last person to leave the Ship . Or go down with it !! You were Flying up until then!" sympathised a second viewer.

A third chipped in: "Doesn't Prue know the rule of the Captain goes down with the ship?"

Another said: "Prue Leith has seen the film, her nephew said he's sure it isn't the Captain, the captain always goes down with the ship. What does she pick? The Captain."

Others criticised her for gambling away money for charity.

"Expected Prue to get that ... after all everyone knows the Captain didn't survive, goes down with his ship. Sounded so confident too," one said. "Wrong to guess though, cost the charity a lot of money."

Prue was among many celebrities who played for good causes on the celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Saturday's edition of the programme saw Piers Morgan face down rival Jeremy as he played for charity.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is available on the ITV Hub.
