Celebrities are often mocked when they change their looks, but a recent joke has made fans smile for an altogether more wholesome reason. Zac Efron, poster child for the boy-next-door image, is sporting a new look for new film The Beach Bum that some are making comparisons to a much-loved toasted sandwich - a Panini.
The look, bleach blond hair with a dark beard (a look that became almost as trendy as beards in 2018 and dubbed the new Millennial Man), goes one step further. In the film, Efron plays a pyromaniac "prayer warrior" and his distinct look is created by cutting straight lines into his beard. Paired with bleach blonde hair, it makes him look a little like a grilled Panini.
This was all according The New Yorker writer Lauren Leibowitz, who confirmed in a tweet that Harmony Korine (director of The Beach Bum) did indeed turn to a Panini as the inspiration for Efron's look. Korine said this during a Q&A event at SXSW and said when asked about Efron's look: "I just stared at a Panini."
Although Efron hasn't yet weighed in on the comments (this is likely because he is still recovering from a knee injury), catering business Panera Bread jumped in saying "if you really wanted a Panini, you could've just asked."
Although the film director has gotten in on the joke, there have been other celebrities whose hairstyles have accidentally looked like food. Back in 2014 (and also sporting bleach blond hair) Justin Timberlake became the subject of a meme that compared his hair to ramen noodles. Lady Gaga often looks to food for her hair inspiration, whilst Donald Trump sometimes gets confused for an ear of corn.
