Alex Hollywood, ex-wife of Paul Hollywood, has opened up on her split from the celeb baker in 2017, comparing it to a 'fatal motorway crash'.
After meeting in 1996, they were married for 19 years and had a son together, before splitting in November 2017.
Alex and Paul had previously separated in 2013 when The Great British Bake Off judge cheated on his wife with co-star Marcela Valladolid while filming for the US version of the show.
Despite splitting in 2013, the married couple got back together for four years. The pair then split up for good in 2017, and Paul is now in a relationship with barmaid Summer Monteys Fullam - the GBBO judge has always insisted there was no overlap between the two.
Speaking about their divorce and the past year in February's edition of Prima, Alex said: "No one should underestimate how separation and divorce can hit you.
"I compare it to a moment where you're driving along the motorway and then the next moment, something beyond your control happens and you're driving in a completely wrong direction. You have to give yourself time to get your head round it.
"We all reflect differently and I went into automatic pilot to start with. I think I went though the same five stages of grief that a bereaved person does [denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance]. Being able to be weak is a strength too, and it's okay to sit and have a cry."
The accomplished food author continued: "Paul and I had an ordinary marriage. It lasted 19 years with a hiccup in the middle and then an abrupt end. But I have a son and I had to be strong for him.
"Now I look ahead and think about what I've gained; the main thing is having freedom to do what I want to do, so it feels like a door opening. I'm feeling very positive at the moment."
Alex has never spoken about Paul cheating on her in the past, despite the baker telling Radio 5 Live at the time that it was 'the biggest mistake of his life'.
Paul said: "I had an affair in the States. It was the biggest mistake of my life - because actually I still love my wife... we are talking, working together but it's going to take time."
However, over a year after splitting from Paul for the final time, Alex has opened up about the 2013 cheating scandal.
She revealed: "I don't regret taking Paul back that first time. I never regret anything I've done.
"I thought things through and it was the right thing to do for me and my son. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but if you make a decision you stick with it.
"I don't feel angry with Paul - though of course there's a certain amount of hurt. Anger is emotive and I'm not carrying that around with me. All it does is upset you.
"I'm not embarrassed that it didn't work out. I've had women contact me who've been in similar situations and I always try and message back. No one is alone."
