Ever since Meghan Markle became a part of the Royal Family, the tabloids have had something to say about her - from her family, to her previous relationships, to the colour nail polish she decides to wear.

But, Oprah Winfrey, who has become firm friends with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is having absolutely none of it.

Oprah appeared on CBS This Morning to talk about her new mental health documentary with Prince Harry, but conversation quickly turned to defending former Suits star Meghan.

Speaking of the lambasting Meghan has received in the press, Oprah said: "I think she's being portrayed unfairly.

"I think that if people really knew her, they would know that she is not only everything we perceive of her being graceful and dynamic in holding that position, but she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart."

She added: "I think it's very unfair."

The Duchess recently told fans if they wish to send baby gifts, they should instead donate to charity - a move that Oprah went on to praise. The talk show host also commented on how Meghan makes a conscious effort to ignore negative press written about her.

"She's very kind. She doesn't seem to buy into [her bad press] though," she said.

"I think that's remarkable that despite everything that's going on she does not read anything."

Speaking of her new venture with the Duke of Sussex, Oprah said: "I think it's going to make - our hope is it's going to have an impact on reducing the stigma and allowing people to know they're not alone and being able to speak up about it and being able to identify it for themselves and their friends."

The show aims to inspire its viewers to have an "honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces," according to a statement issued on the Prince Harry's new official Instagram account, which launched last week.
