Love Island's Laura Crane has spoken out about the terrifying ordeal with sepsis that she endured this month. The 23-year-old's life was at risk when she spent 10 days in hospital with the blood infection and her description of the experience is terrifying.

Professional surfer Laura told Lorraine Kelly how she initially thought she was suffering from intense period pains and it's still not known how she contracted the life-threatening infection.

"I didn't realise how ill I was. I had this crazy high temperature. my heart felt like it was coming through my shirt," she recalled.

"My mum luckily was coming up to London to see me because I wasn't replying to my texts. If my mum didn't come I wouldn't have gone to hospital that day.

"For me I couldn't understand how my own body had created it. I thought it must be something else. It took them a long time to find where the infection had started."

Laura also heaped praise on her ex-boyfriend, Jack Fowler, who she met during her time in the Love Island villa.

Despite splitting up just a few weeks after leaving the show, Jack stayed by Laura's bedside during the worst week of her life.

"He was amazing. We stayed really good friends. We went through such a big thing together," she explained.

Laura also thanked the 'incredible' NHS for saving her life and being able to give her a diagnosis so quickly.

She said: "I've never had a definitive answer as to why. I went in there with what I thought was really bad period pains. I thought after a paracetamol I'll be fine."

"I woke up with a crazy high temperature. I was delirious and had no concept of time. I remember my mum driving to the house and me getting in the car. My mum said 'this isn't Laura'."

"For the first five days I was in hospital when they were trying to figure out where the infection was as I got worse. My temperature went really high and low. My heat rate wouldn't stabilise. That is when I was really terrified."

Laura was joined by GP Sarah Jarvis, who said: "It absolutely is [a killer]. You are unusual in getting it but it can happen to anyone."

Lorraine continues on weekdays on ITV at 8.30am.
