When Grimes and Elon Musk announced they were naming their baby boy X Æ A-12, eyebrows were raised.
Of course, some didn't put it past the tech whizz and the quirky singer - celeb baby names are often somewhat weird, after all. But others thought they must be having us on, and even suggested the name could simply be code for a simpler, more pronounceable title.

Now, a lawyer has indeed confirmed the name wouldn't have been allowed in their hometown California, where the baby was presumably born.
"In California, you can only use the '26 characters' of the English language in your baby name," family law attorney David Glass told People.
"Thus, you can't have numbers, Roman numerals, accents, umlauts or other symbols or emojis. Although an apostrophe, for a name like 'O'Connor,' is acceptable."

He added that if the celebrity couple filled out the baby's birth certificate "with the odd numbers, dashes and symbols, it will be submitted and then rejected and they'll be asked to submit it again."
"I don't think you can say it's illegal - it just won't be accepted," he explained.
"So your child won't have an official name and won't have a birth certificate and you can't get a social security number until you have a birth certificate and on down the line."

Hmmm. The plot thickens.
This means it's pretty likely X Æ A-12 isn't on the birth certificate. So, what is?
And if they have given the baby another, more pronounceable name, too, will they ever use it?!
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced the arrival of their little boy on Tuesday, sharing a picture of himself holding his newborn son.

After a fan asked the name, the tech whizz revealed the bizarre moniker, replying: "X Æ A-12 Musk".
Grimes - whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher - went on to explain the meaning behind the moniker in more detail.

"X, the unknown variable," she wrote, "Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence).
"A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent."
Anyone any clearer? Nope, us either.
She also explained that the "A" in the name also stands for her "favourite song", "Archangel,", while the 12 stands for the Chinese zodiac sign of the rat, which we are currently in.
Grimes has previously told fans she wants to raise her baby gender neutral.
When asked if she was having a girl or a boy earlier this year, she replied: "They may decide their fate and identity."
It remains to be seen whether the couple will reveal another pronunciation of the name, or whether that really is it.
We mean, it would have been more of a shock if the baby had an ordinary name, wouldn't it?!
